OBITUARY
MR DAVID JONES. FORMER MEAT BOARD CHAIRMAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The death occurred in a private hospital in Wellington this morning of Mr David Jones, aged 67. Member of Parliament, at various times, for Kaiapoi, Ellesmere and MidCanterbury. Mr Jones was in 1931-1932 Minister of Agriculture. With the exception of two years spent in the Waikato (1909-10) Mr Jones farmed successfully in Canterbury. He took a prominent part in the formation of the Farmers’ Union and was three times North Canterbury President. He successfully conducted the case of 8.000 farmers cited by the Farm Labourers' Union before the Arbitration Court, no award being made. Mr Jones was presented with an illuminated address and purse of sovereigns. He served on the New Zealand Wheat Board during the 1914-18 war and on the Repatriation Board. He was chairman of the Parliamentary Committee which recommended the establishment of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board and was chairman of that board from its inception until he resigned in 1931. He was re-elected chairman in 1932, on his retirement from the Ministry. He went to Britain on behalf of the board in connection with the Empire Exhibition.
