REPORT & DENIAL
U.S.A. REPRESENTATIVE AT VATICANNO ITALIAN DEMAND FOR EXPULSION. STCRY OF SPECIAL MISSION TO AMERICA. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK., September 20. It is reported that the Italian Ambassador to the Vatican. Signor Attolico, has informed the Pope that the presence of Mr Myron Taylor (.President Roosevelt's personal envoy) at the Vatican has created a bad impression with the Italian Government, how that the United States, is considered to have made a de facto entry into the war against the Axis.
A report from Rome states that: “It is authoritatively denied that Signor Attolico has informed the Vatican that Mr Taylor’s presence in Italy can no longer be tolerated.” The “New Yory Post” publishes under a banner line an exclusive copyright story from a European representative saying that the Italian Government has sent a special mission to the United Stales to prepare to take over immediately the representation of Italy in Washington should the Axis rupture and dissolve as the Berlin-Moscow pact did. It is said that the journey was made with the knowledge and consent of the British blockade authorities. No immediate breach of the Axis is predicted, but the mission will serve as a form of insurance if Nazi pressure on Italy becomes too severe. The British Air Ministry reports that Italian civilians cheered British bombers which attacked munition factories at Licdta on Wednesday, when heavy damage was done.
