VARIOUS REPORTS

INTENSIFIED NAZI EFFORTS

EXPECTED AGAINST ODESSA & LENINGRAD. RUSSIANS SHOWING INITIATIVE IN NORTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON. September 21. German sources claim that the city of Kiev was captured at noon on Friday. Reports from Moscow suggest that the Germah High Command is now devoting greater attention to Odessa and also increasing pressure on Leningrad. Despite the continuous German air offensive, the Russian troops on the Leningrad front are still counter-at-tacking vigorously and the Germans are unable to claim any new advance. Indeed the Germans seem not to have progressed materially for several days, while the defenders retain the iniative at many points. A Moscow radio message says that, after suffering heavy losses during unsuccessful attacks westwards of Leningrad, the Germans attempted a surprise attack at a new unnamed point. Tanks sent in to smash the Russian positions were repulsed with artillery. The “Pravda” says powerful artillery barrages, driving the Germans into hastily-dug trenches, are constantly upsetting the German plans. The Russians have recaptured two villages within a strategically important railway zone.
