HARMONY IN IRAN
ALLIES AND THE NEW GOVERNMENT NO ANTAGONISM TO PEOPLE. ACTION DIRECTED ONLY AGAINST AXIS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) RUGBY, September 21. The latest news from Iran shows that the British and Soviet military authorities are working in close harmony with the Iranian Government, a state of affairs largely brought about by a realisation that the Allies’ moves are directed against the Axis and very far from being antagonistic to the Persian people. This was made abundantly clear when the British and Soviet troops camped on the outskirts of Teheran, instead of occupying it — a forebearance greatly appreciated by both the Iran Government and the people. THE EX-SHAH PROSECUTION DEMANDED BY REPUBLICANS. AMNESTY TO POLITICAL PRISONERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 20. A message from Teheran says that the Republican section of the Iranian Parliament is reported to have demanded the trial of the ex-Shah. It is also reported that 500 political prisoners have already been released under the new Shah’s amnesty. A round-up of the refugee rebels from Iraq is proceeding.
The ’Daily Telegraph’s” Teheran correspondent yesterday said that a British column of several hundred armoured vehicles occupied the inner suburbs of Teheran, taking over from the Russians. They also occupied the Skoda machine-gun factory east of the city.
