“SHOOT ON SIGHT”
SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT FROM FORMER OPPONENT. EFFECTIVE AID TO ALLIES URGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright! ’ (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, September 19. A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Dirksen, previously a strong opponent of the Administration’s foreign policy, said domestic opposition to President Roosevelt’s shoot on sight order to the Navy would: “Impair our prestige and imperil the nation.” He urged the American people to adopt a policy of “moderationism,” opposed to isolationism and interventionism. Mr Dirksen added that Congress should provide such funds, supplies and authority as were needed to make the policy of assisting Britain and her Allies effective.
