GENEROUS GIFT
MADE TO N.Z. TROOPS IN MIDDLE EAST SUM OF £lOOO DONATED BY MAJOR DUIGAN. GOVERNMENT EXPRESSES GRATITUDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) today announced that cabled advice had been received from Major-General Freyberg that Major Denis F. Duigan had donated £lOOO to the Second N.Z.E.F. troops in the Middle East. Major Duigan, who is a brother of MajorGeneral Duigan, former Chief of the General Staff in New Zealand, served in the last war with distinction. On the outbreak of the present war he was appointed Camo Commandant of the Second N.Z.E.F. at its base camp at Maadi, Egypt, but later was invalided to England, where his home is. Mr Jones said General Freyberg had intimated that this generous gift was being divided between units of the Second N.Z.E.F. and the bases, the division being decided by a Welfare Committee and the commanding officer. General Freyberg sent a message of appreciation to Major Duigan, and the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, also sent a similar message, expressing, on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Government, the grateful thanks of New Zealand for the gift. _____
