FIRE & EXPLOSIONS
FIERCE BLAZE AT MIRAMAR VARNISH SHOP GUTTED. BRIGADE PREVENTS SPREAD OF OUTBREAK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Explosions shook parts of Miramar at about 2 a.m., while firemen battled to prevent a fierce fire in the varnish preparing section of Pinchin Johnson and Company’s paint and varnish factory from spreading to the main portion of the works. For three-quarters of an hour the brigade concentrated on putting up a barrage of water between the blazing section and a nearby two-storey block in which further highly inflamable material was stored. The varnish shop, a large, rambling building of composite construction, totalling about 3,000 square feet, was almost entirely gutted, but the damage was confined to this building. The cause of the fire is at present unknown and an investigation is proceeding. The explosions are thought to have been caused either by exploding varnish vats or the ignition of gas pockets formed in the building.
