GLOOM IN ITALY

DUCE ILL & DISAPPOINTED MAN LIVING SURROUNDED BY GESTAPO. PEOPLE KEEN LISTENERS TO 8.8. C. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, September 17. Highly-placed Americans returning home from Italy paint a gloomy picture of conditions in Italy. They say that Mussolini ,is an ill and disappointed man. He is reported to be living in semi-seclusion surrounded by members of the Gestapo. The Italian people are openly saying they would prefer to become a British rather than a German colony. The Italians are keen listeners to 'the 8.8. C. which gives them all the news. Their own stations dole out small, inspired bulletins.
