CHECK ON STRIKES

IN CANADIAN WAR INDUSTRIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) OTTAWA, September 18. An Order in Council prohibits strikes in the defence industries except where a majority of the workers vote in favour. The order further provides that the strike vote must be supervised by the Labour Department. Hitherto strikes have been illegal before the dispute is examined by the Conciliation Board, whose findings need not be accepted by the management or the workers. The New York “Herald-Tribune says semi-official figures from Ottawa show that Canada is spending 3,000,000 000 dollars for war purposes for the fiscal year 1941-42. This is half of Canada’s national income, and it is double the United States’ effort on the basis of population.
