ALLIED PLEDGE HONOURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 16. A message from Damascus says that General Catroux, the Free French Commander-in-Chief in the Levant, has, in the name of the Allies, restored the Syrian Republic and vested it in sovereignty in accordance with the promise of the Allies. General Catroux has appointed a President of the Syrian Republic. The President will have power to appoint a Cabinet which will negotiate a treaty and give effect to the Allied promise to maintain Syrian independence General Catroux’s move follows the resignation of the Syrian Cabinet today.
