CARTERTON

YOUTHS SENTENCED TWO YEARS IN BORSTAL INSTITUTE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Patrick John Holmes (aged 18) and Joseph Benjamin Richard Aylward (aged 19), who were recently arrested at Petone for breaking and entering Mr M. W. Worsfold’s jewellery shop, Carterton, were yesterday sentenced by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in the Wellington Supreme Court to two years’ detention in a borstal institution. ; Commenting on the wave of crime in New Zealand in which youths were concerned, the Chief Justice attributed it in part to the high wages now being paid to youths and young men. Among the youths so minded, he said, large wages seemed to give them no idea of the value of money and made them careless of the property of other people. Two youths before the Court were reported to be receiving £4 4s and £6 10s a week respectively. RED CROSS SOCIETY CANTEEN OF CUTLERY RAFFLED. The raffle for the canteen of cutlery presented to the Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society by Mrs C. Hodder presented a parcel of woollen comforts to their guest on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mr L. J. Fairbrother, on behalf of the Carterton Swimming Club, handed Leading Aircraftsman Brown a gift from the Swimming Club. Leading Aircraftman Brown suitably replied. Football Club Dance. Tonight at the Masonic Hall, Carterton, a dance will be held by the Carterton Football Club to mark the winning of the Wairarapa senior championship. Soldiers’ Christmas Gifts. -Seven soldiers have so far left the Clareville district for service with the armed forces and as a result Clareville residents have decided that each shall be provided with a parcel of Christmas cheer. They will forward to the committee concerned a cheque for £2 16s to cover the expense of purchasing and dispatching these parcels. The Carterton Fire Brigade is similarly treating its members who are with the fighting forces. All-Party Government Supported. In his recent speech at Carterton Mr J. J. Maher, National candidate for Wairarapa, said that as the winning of the war was of paramount importance, an all-party Government should be formed to get a 100 per cent war effort. Next in importance was the rehabilitation of returned soldiers into civilian life and the necessity for hard work and thrift to develop New Zealand to its maximum productive capacity.
