ON THE EASTERN FRONT
Progress Claimed by the Germans at Leningrad AND IN SOUTHERN RUSSIA MANY ENEMY DIVE-BOMBERS SHOT DOWN LONDON, September 16. In the Leningrad area, the Germans claim to have advanced through a maze of Russian fortifications to a point 15 miles south of the city. Although Kiev is gravely threatened, the Russian defenders have destroyed 30,000 Germans in battles there. In the Lower Dnieper the Germans claim to be pressing towards the Crimea, against fierce Russian resistance. German dive-bombers are being shot down in scores. The latest bag totals 29, for the loss of 18 Russian planes.
