BRITISH LOCOMOTIVES
SHIPPED SAFELY TO TURKEY. Britain’s locomotive works are still keeping overseas railways supplied with equipment despite the fact that they are also turning out vast quantities of such war equipment as tanks, torpedoes, shells, bombs, gun mountings and carriages, and even mooring buoys and anchors. Twenty-seven locomotives, having a total value of over £300,000, were shipped from Britain in the first three months of this year to Turkey, Egypt, Iraq. South Africa and the Straits Settlements. Shipments are still going on and despite war hazards in the Mediterranean, further deliveries have been made to Turkey since the end of the first quarter, making a total of 22 this year. Where new locomotives cannot be supplied Britain is sending boilers for re-equipping existing engines. A total cf 38 was exported during the March quarter, to’ India. South Africa, Peru and Uruguay. These have an average value of £2,000 each. Britain’s locomotive works now employ over 10,000 hands, including many women.
