SPIRITUAL PROBLEM

PRINCIPLES OF FAITH. “In the present warfare the principles of our faith are crucial if mankind is to avoid the pit of destruction,’ said Professor John Baillie in an address to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. “It is vain to imagine that after the war Europe and the world will find ordered and happy life and become a community of nations if only there be brought into being large economic plans to facilitate the passage of goods, vast financial schemes to encourage industry . and some form of federation of the nations, with international courts and police and armies for the settlement of disputes and the restraint of a rebel State. Such as these there must be, of course, and the vastness of the problem is an indication of the greatness of the changes which we must expect in economics, in finance and in the realm of national sovereignty. But the whole problem must be viewed as essentially a religious problem, in which man’s spiritual nature must be given overriding emphasis.”
