GERMAN THRUSTS
MURMANSK, GOMEL & DNIEPER AREAS SITUATION STILL UNCERTAIN. RUSSIANS REMAIN RETICENT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.23 a.m.) RUGBY, September 12. No precise details have reached London of the renewed German offensive in the extreme north of the eastern front with Murmansk, which it is believed here must by now be heavily fortified, as the presumable goal. As » far as is known in London, no Finnish troops are participating in this operation. It is considered unlikely that the position in this sector will be clarified for a few days. In the central sector, the German thrust south-east from Gomel is still dangerous and appears to be making certain progress. If successful, this thrust would endanger Kiev and the Dnieper defence. The Russians admit that German forces have obtained a foothold on the eastern bank of the southern stretch of the Dnieper. It is not known, however, what is the strength of this German bridgehead. A midday Russian communique maintains its usual reticence and merely states: “During last night our troops were engaged in fighting with the enemy on the entire front.”
