GERMAN AIR ASSAULTS ON CITV RUSSIAN COUNTER-ATTACKS IN OTHER SECTORS. REPORT OF SICKNESS AMONG NAZI TROOPS. LONDON, September 12. The Luftwaffe is mass-raiding Leningrad. Waves of Stukas and Heinkels,. 200 at a time, escorted by fighters are attacking the city. says the “Daily Telegraph’s” Stockholm correspondent. Considerable damage and many casualties have been caused. The German news agency admits that there have been repeated Russian counter-attacks of varying strength in the sector eastward of Smolensk and Gomel, but it claims that these have now ceased and adds that Smolensk and Gomel are still in German hands. A Berlin report says that Smolensk is under continuous fire from Russian artillery of the “Big Bertha” type, firing from a distance of atjeast 45 miles. A serious German foothold beyond the Dnieper is indicated in last night’s Moscow communique. It told of guerilla activity near two places 30 miles east of the river and about- halfway between the ruined dam and the Crimea. Nothing further is known about these developments. It was reported from Moscow late tonight that the Russians were attacking a vital village held by the Germans on the approaches to Leningrad and that a terrific battle has been raging in the vicinity for the last four days, as a result of which the Russians firmly hold the initiative against numerically superior forces. The Moscow correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain reports that Russian troops under General Eremenko recaptured 10 villages on the central front and advanced 10 to 12 miles.
The Russian news agency says that fierce fighting is proceeding in the direction of Luki (100 miles north-west of Smolensk), where the Russians recently killed over 12,000 Germans, destroyed 340 tanks, and shot down 47 planes.
According to the “Daily Telegraph,” information has reached London that the German casualties on the Russian front have been so heavy that the Germans have run out of linen and are now using paper bandages for dressing wounds.
The Russian news agency says German prisoners report that dysentery has broken out among the German troops. The doctors are handicapped through lack of medical supplies. The Germans are also complaining of the dearth of warm clothing, and are fearing the approach of winter.
Meanwhile, the Helsinki radio reports the first snowfalls in northern Finland.
