TRAVEL PERMITS
GENERAL SCHEME POSSIBLE DIFFICULTIES OF WORKERS IN BRITAIN. VEHICLES AVAILABLE LIMITED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 11. The possibility of the introduction of a general scheme of travel permits was referred to in the House of Commons today by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport, Mr Liewellin, who was replying to a debate in which many references were made to the difficulties workers are experiencing in obtaining public transport because of the reduction in the number of vehicles available and their use by shoppers at hours when workers are coming off duty. The Minister said every, effort was being made to increase the number of buses, and added: “We are also trying out a scheme in the North Midland region of travel permits for workers. The first day on which the scheme was in operation between Macclesfield and Nottingham, 100 shoppers, not having the necessary permits, were left behind. The second day the number was 80 and the third day 50. By the fourth day shoppers had learned what was happening and there were none to be left behind. If the experiment proves successful it will be extended to other parts of the country.”
THIRD CLASS ONLY ACCOMMODATION ON CERTAIN TRAINS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 11. From October 6 all trains which both begin and end their journeys within the London passenger transport area, extended to certain points somewhat beyond that area, will be third class only. First class accommodation will continue to be provided on trains beginning and ending their journeys outside but making stops within this area. This decision has been taken to meet the wartime difficulties of workers travelling daily in and out of London where the concentration is greater in number and time than in any other city and where the journey home is ' longer.
