WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs W. Nielsen presided over the monthly meeting of the MatarawaDalefield Institute, when there was a good attendance of members and visitors. Mrs Barnicoat, of Wellington, who was accorded a hearty welcome by the president, gave an interesting talk on the aims and objects of the Women’s Institutes. The judges of the competitions, Mesdames A. Knutson, Geo. Couper and Moran, made their awards as follows: —Seniors: Butter sponge, Mrs A. Goodin, 1; Mrs Geo. Sadler, 2; Mrs W. J. McPhee, 3. Three best bulbs: Mrs W. Ticehurst, 1; Mrs W. Knowles, 2; Mrs Rogers, 3. Knitting: Mrs Rogers, 1: Mrs McLaren, 2; Mrs W. Knowles, 3. Juniors: —Best flower: Miss J. Goodin, 1; Miss B. Sadler, 2: Miss B. Knowles, 3. Scones: Miss J. Goodin, 1: Miss G. Conwell, 2; Miss J. Zillwood, 3. Knitting: Miss I. Zillwood. 1; Miss G. Conwell and Miss B. Sadler, equal, 2; Miss J. Goodin, 3. It was reported that members of the Institute had knitted 31 balaclavas for men in the navy. The following knitting had been done during the month: Six pullovers for the Air Force, 3 Air Force balaclavas, 4 Air Force scarves, 3 pair khaki mittens and 5 khaki balaclavas. Sewing for refugees which had been clone by members was on exhibition and reflected great credit on those concerned.
