Mr K. J. Holyoake. the National Party candidate for the Pahiatua electorate. has taken up his residence on his farm at Waitahora. Dannevirke. Mr S. G. Holland. Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington for Christchurch last night by the steamer express.
Before the House of Representatives adjourned yesterday until Wednesday afternoon, Mr Holland asked the Act-ing-Prime Minister, who went to Auckland last night, to convey the Opposition’s greetings to the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, on his return from abroad. After 40 years; service in different Government, departments, including many years as a prominent member of the secretarial staff at Parliament Buildings, Mr S. Y. Jones, chief private secretary to the Minister of Labour and Mines, Mr Webb, retired on superannuation yesterday. The death has occurred of Mr Albert Edward Glover, former M.P. for Auckland Central, aged 93. Local government had strong attractions for him, and he went through the usual routine of school committee, city council, and so on, eventually in 1908 being elected member of Parliament by a large majority for Auckland Central. In the House he was known for his consistent championing of the claims of the “Queen City of the North,” a title he never tired of bestowing on the city of his adoption. Of his constituency he had a unique knowledge, and it was said that he was acquainted with somebody in every house in the electorate.
