MEETING IN MASTERTON LAST NIGHT TIN HARE RACING PROPOSED AT MEMORIAL, PARK. LEASE OF DRILL HALL CONSIDERED. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust was held last night. The chairman, Mr H. P. Hugo, presided. There were also present: Messrs J. Macfarlane Laing, E. G. Eton, C. E. Grey, H. H. Daniell, R. Krahagen, A. Owen Jones, J. A. Russell and the secretary, Mr A. W, McKenzie. An apology for absence was received from Mr R. Page. The treasurer reported a total credit balance of £266’ 6s 3d. Accounts amounting to £154 and grants totalling £277 10s were passed for payment. The Wairarapa Coursing Club wrote enquiring on what terms Memorial 1 Park could be used for mechanical hare racing during the summer months. It was decided to advise the club that the Trust would agree to the Wairarapa Rugby Union letting the park to the club for the summer of 1941-1942, provided that a rent of 10 per cent of the gate takings be paid direct to the Trust. The chairman and Mr Daniell were appointed to finalise arrangements with the Rugby Union and the Coursing Club. The building committee reported that it had been in conference with representatives of the Defence Department, and endeavours had been made to settle terms for a new lease of the Drill Hall. The principal matter for settlement was the question of liability for repairing and fixing the floor. The Defence Department had been asked to arrange for a representative to inspect the building with a representative of the Trust. After an inspection had been made it was hoped that finality in the matter would be reached. The trustees considered that the Defence Department had been fortunate in securing the building for £5O pei' annum and the view was expressed by several members that the floor had been put to a severe test with men drilling and practising with rifles and machine-guns practically every night of the week. It was decided to give the matter further consideration at the next meeting. The Masterton Borough Council was granted the free use of the Opera House on Tuesday, September 23, for an exhibition of war pictures. The headmaster of the Whatman School, wrote thanking the trust for grants made to the school.
