Terrific Battles Continue NO SLACKENING IN GERMAN ONSLAUGHT NAZIS SUFFERING TREMENDOUS LOSSES LONDON, September LI. Stubborn fighting continues all along the Russian front of 2000 miles, from Murmansk to the Dnieper. The Germans are suffering tremendous losses in their attempts to capture Leningrad. They are hurling great masses of aircraft against the city and the Russians are' bringing them down in scores. Leaflets have been dropped over Leningrad by the Germans, threatening the three million inhabitants with the same fate as that suffered by the people of Warsaw, if they put up a fight. The Germans say that fires were caused m all parts of the town as the result of German air raids. No Russian report has been given as to the raid and there is no sign of any weakness on the part of the city’s defenders. . Renewed activity is reported on the Finnish front. The Russians report a successful counter-attack between the White Sea and the Finnish frontier. A new German thrust is also reported against Murmansk. . . ~ • In the central sector fierce fighting is taking place all round the German wedge near Smolensk. A Russian attack is reported 19 miles east of Smolensk. Guerillas behind the German lines are giving valuable assistanc to the Russian troops and have occupied villages and towns. The Germans claim a success north of Kiev. There are indications that the Russian counter-attack m the Gomel area has not prevented the Germans from continuing their dnve south towards Kiev, though the Russians say that one German drive had been checked.
