STILL CRITICAL
FAR EASTERN OUTLOOK MR DUFF COOPER’S COMMENT. PLANNING TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND. LONDON, September 9. Britain would take a serious view of any further southward expansion by Japan, said Mr Duff Cooper, on his arrival at Singapore. He was unable to say what action Britain might take, but Japanese provocation would meet with a strong British reaction. There had been a slowing-down of the Far Eastern tempo, but no lowering of the temperature. He added that the purpose of his visit was to report to the British Cabinet on the desirability of appointing a representative in the Far East similar to Captain Lyttelton’s appointment in Cairo. Before returning to Britain in six
months’ time, Mr Cooper will visit Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands East Indies. Burma, and possibly China.
