GAINING MOMENTUM
TIMOSHENKO’S ONSLAUGHT DEVELOPING INTO MAJOR OFFENSIVE. ANOTHER ENEMY DIVISION ROUTED. (Received This Day. 11.30 a.m.) MOSCOW. September 10. Marshal Timoshenko’s advance in the central sector of the Russian front is developing into a major offensive. Attacking in the direction of Gomel; Marshal Timoshenko’s forces routed the 29th German Infantry Division. The “Red Star” claims that the German offensive has been halted along the entire central front and that the Russians are continuing sweeping attacks, including thrusts towards Smolensk. The Germans left thousands of dead. A gigantic tank battle is proceeding in one sector distinct from Elnia. where Marshal Timoshenko pushed back the Germans beyond the River “N.” Four thousand Germans were drowned while retreating across the river. The “Izvestia” says the forces under General Guderian have recaptured several villages and destroyed 300 tanks during a five-day battle, in which the Russians attacked the German flank, compelling one infantry and one tank division to retreat after separation. The “Izvestia” declared that the Germans and Austrians lost 80,000 dead and wounded in the Elnia battle and added that the 15th Rumanian Division attacking outside Odessa melted away under powerful Russian counter blows, in which several Rumanian gunners turned their guns against the Germans.
