DISCLOSED IN LENINGRAD AREA

Russians Pressing Counter-Offensive on Central Front RUMANIANS MAKING NO PROGRESS AGAINST ODESSA SACRIFICES NEEDED IN BRITAIN TO PROVIDE SUPPLIES FOR SOVIET LONDON, September 10. Fierce fighting - continues round Leningrad and all along the Eastern front. German casualties in the Leningrad area are on a heavy scale. A German military commentator said it could not yet be predicted when Leningrad would fall. Some day, he added, it would fall without any doubt. Another report states that the Germans expect Leningrad to fall within a fortnight. The German High Command, m the meantime, makes no special claim to fresh progress. A Finnish report says German and Finnish forces expect to join up east of Leningrad shortly. In the central sector the fierce Russian counter-offensive south-east of Smolensk is continuing and the Russians are following up their great victory in that area. Further south, in the Gomel sector, they are delivering counter-attacks in an attempt to stem the German threat to Kiev. The “Pravda” states that outside Odessa the Rumanians are no nearer their objective than they were a month ago. The entire population is helping in the defence of the city. Mr Arthur Greenwood, Minister without portfolio, said Britain must make a great sacrifice to put into the hands of Russia the supplies she needed.
