PERSONAL

The Hon. P. C. Webb. Minister of Labour, returned to Wellington yesterday by steamer express from Lyttelton. During schooling operations yesterday morning, Mr C. ,W. Burgess, the Trentham hurdle horseman, received a broken, leg, and was taken to the Wellington Public Hospital by tne Free Ambulance. Brigadier A. S. Falconer, whose nomination as National candidate for Dunedin North had been ratified, has cabled stating that he is now unable, because of military duties overseas, to acept nomination at the forthcoming election. The electorate committee will call for fresh nominations.

The following appointments have been made m connection with the local Baptist Church of Christ:—Official Board. Messrs C. J. Sims (chairman), W. Teboon (secretary), W. V. Madden A.P.A.N.Z. (treasurer). C. W. Gaze, and F. M. Watkins; Mesdames F. Madden. S. F. Mills and R. Watkins, and Miss Sutherland.

Messrs S. M. Stone and J. Kershaw, who have been delegates to the Wellington Bowling Centre for 18 years, but who have relinquished their positions, were farewelled at a meeting of the centre on Tuesday night by the president, Mr T. Lock. Mr Stone was president of the centre in 1925 and 1926, and has been a member of the Dominion Council for 15 years, being elected Dominion president in 1929. Mr Kershaw has been treasurer of the centre for many years. Mr Lock presented Mr Stone with a tobacco pouch and Mi’ Kershaw with an umbrella.

The death occurred recently at Takaka, Nelson, of Mr Norman Cairns, a former well known and respected resident of Masterton, Mr Cairns, who saw wai’ service from 1914 to 1918, was foreman of the Public Works Department in the Takaka district. He was educated at the Wairarapa District High School and lived in Masterton until about 16 years ago. Mesdames G. C. Petersen (Palmerston North), |S. Cooper (New Plymouth), Miss C. Cairns (Palmerston North) are sisters and Messrs J. R. Cairns (Wellington) and W. J. F. Cairns (Masterton) are brothers’.
