COMMENTS ON FORM
WHO WILL WIN COUNTY CUP MAY BE A HARD RACE TO PICK. BEAU CIEL AND PIASTRE IN GOOD FETTLE. The class of horse which will be seen out at’ Clareville on Saturday should provide keen racing, and. if the weather is fine, some good‘’times Of course, chief interest will centre round the Wairarapa County Cup. and hero there vzill bo a difficult task ahead of the racing public to select the winner. Ay the new racing season has only really just commenced there is not much to guide patrons in the matter of form, but a study of last season’s performances may help considerably in reaching a decision. T. R. George has a large contingent of horses training at Clareville and a number of them will compete at ■'he Carterton meeting. Opaki will be represented by a strong string of quality horses and the racing public, will take a keen interest in the rivalry between Ills Clareville and Opaki stables. Beau Ciel and Piastre are reported to be shaping well in their track work.
(By “THE GRAFTER.”) THE popular Carterton Racing Club will hold its annual fixture on the suitably " situated racecourse at Clareville, and if the acceptance response is any criterion, the meeting should be the most successful recorded in the long histoiy of a c u which assisted to plant the best traditions of racing in the Wairarapa. Hom tne happy-go-lucky days of racing at Taratahi up till the present day, the Cai terton Club has always played a prominent part in the Sport of kings, and long ago established its popularity with racing patrons in the Wairarapa and far beyond tne oordei of this part of the Wellington Province. The club has never been more ably sei vec in the matter of officials than it is today—men who have worthily upnela the best traditions of a club which has always conducted its meetings in the interests of c.ean sport that will appeal to the public. The club has had, at times, a hara row to hoe, but has always fought valiantly, with the result that there are bright days ahead or it.
Sceotre. , , The Opaki-trained Sceptre has done nothing so far this season, opening with unplaced positions at the C.J.C. meeting last month. Last season the Bulandshar mare won three races all under a mile. She is reported to be striding along nicely in her work but may yet want a few gallops before being'quite ready. Many will doubtless hold the view that the cup distance will be too far for her. Piastre. piastre landed four wins last season, including the Autumn Handicap (1 mile 3 fur.) at Trentham in March, the Egmont Cun over 1.1 miles, the Jubilee Handicap (1 mile) at Tauherenikau, and the Champion Hack Handicap (LI miles) at Awapuni. This form may induce backers to give the Salmagundi gelding a considerable measure of support. Beau Ciel. Beau Ciel showed good form generally last season, including a LI mile win at Wanganui, a mile event at the Wairarapa meeting in April, the Nelson Cup over 1.1 miles in May, the Redwood Memorial Handicap (1 mile and 1 fur.) and the Raukawa Handicap (1J- miles) at Otaki in May. Taking last season as a guide Beau Ciel will be a hard proposition to beat on a course the Beau Pore gelding should know well. Trench Law. Trench Law has done nothing so fa~ this season, but is said to bo rap’d 1 ' getting into his stride. His onb’ last season was the Foxton Cup (I 1 miles), though he filled places on fiwoccasions. Auroras Star. Auroras Star has not shown form over the past twelve months to suggest that she will win the chief event. She is said to be training well on the track and has improved considerably. Her last win in the late season was in June at Dannevirke, when she ac- [ counted for the Kaitoke' Handicap over I.’ miles. Her other win last season I was in the Davidson Handicap (9 furlongs) at the Egmont meeting in May. j In the circumstances the favourites I on the machine may be: i Beau Ciel Piastre Trench Law
