CARTERTON RACES

meeting of stewards. 23 NEW MEMBERS ELECTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club, presided over by Mr W. Howard Booth, was held in the secretary’s office last evening. There were also present: Messrs L. H. Smart, P. Bain, E. J. Matson, J. C. Harp, G. A. Vincent, V. L. Robinson, H. J. Brown, W. C. Deller, J. Johnson, and the secretary, Mr H. Mortenson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Geo. H. Eaton, C. Jensen and F. Yule.

The treasurer reported a dr. balance at the Bank of £9BB 17s lOd. Twenty-three new members were elected.

The Manager of New Zealand Railways wrote forwarding the special train arrangements for race day. Mr S. V. McEwen, Wellington, notified that he was prepared to broadcast the racing on the grounds. Messrs N. R. Cunningham Ltd. (Masterton) wrote stating that they would erect their broadcasting machine on the racecourse. The question of a starting hurdle for the races was left to the chairman to arrange. It was resolved that a working bee of stewards attend the course on Monday next at 1 p.m. to put the appointments in order. The chairman stated that a trophy had been given to the club for the jockey gaining the most points in riding, 3 points to count for a win, 1 for a second, and | for third. Mr Booth said that such a competition was unique in the history of racing in New Zealand. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the donor for his gift, the nature of which will remain unknown until presented to the successful joc-l key. The question of. protecting the golf greens on race day was brought up by Mr Vincent, and it was resolved that the greens be roped off. Ministers of Parliament, including the Hons. W. Nash, D. G. Sullivan and W. E. Parry, wrote thanking the club for invitations to be present at the Carterton races on Saturday, September 13, but intimated that owing to Parliamentary duties they would be

unable to attend. The Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay, notified that he would be present at the meeting. The Railway Department announcement giving particulars of special train arrangements for the race meeting at Clareville on Saturday, September 13, will be found in the advertising columns of this issue.
