HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK
SOME USEFUL HINTS. When washed articles are too dry to iron, they should be damped down with lukewarm water, as this spreads the dampness through them quicker and more evenly. If you have the misfortune to burn a saucepan, the marks should disappear if the. saucepan is filled with hot water to which a handful of kitchen salt has been added. Aftex- it has been standing fox- an hour ox- two, rub with a coarse rag dipped in salt. When making fruit pies or tarts, etc.. if a little flour is sprinkled over the fruit before the top layer of pastry is added the syrup will be thickened, and the juice will not boil ovex- and soak into the crust. When vanilla essence is too prominent in cake mixture, custard, etc., add a little lemon essence; this counteracts the flavour and gives a delicious taste.
