ANZAC HEROES
STILL FIGHTING IN CRETE GUERILLA WARFARE. IN COMPANY WITH GREEKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 4. “The heroes of Homer’s ‘lliad’ would have understood the heroism of the Anzacs who missed the rescue boats and are still fighting with Greece guerillas in Crete,” says the “Herald-Tri-bune,” “Cretans and Anzacs do not even need common speech to understand each other. The heroism and endurance of the Cretans is a worthy counterpart to the fearlessness and determination of New Zealanders and Australians who are fighting for Crete as though they, too, were sons of Hellas.” DEFENCE OF CRETE MORE A VICTORY THAN DEFEAT. BITTER PILL FOR GERMANS. (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, September 4. Mr J. Paul Thorn, of the American Red Cross, who has arrived in London from Athens, declared that the defence c:f Crete was more of a victory than defeat, since it was responsible for saving Irak. Mr Thorn, from talks with German base officers before and after the battle, gathered that Crete was a bitter pill for the Germans. Those in Athens expected the operations to last two days. Crete became a very sore subject with the Germans and long after it was over it was not a topic one wanted to bring up in conversation.
