Kauri Root Grafts.
The curious fact that the stumps of two kauri trees at Titirangi, Auckland, that were felled at least 70 years ago are still living was explained bj Professor T. L. Lancaster to members of the Auckland Rotary Club. He said he had known these slumps for quite 20 years and they were carrying _ on still alive though they had no foliage to give them food. The explanation lay in the power of the kauri to form natural root grafts where the roots oi one tree crossed those of another. In the case he referred to the roots from the stumps were found to be grafted on to the roots of a living kauri tree about 2ft. in diameter some 20ft. away. The stumps were really acting as parasites on the other tree.
