Mr L. R. Usmar, of Wellington, general secretary of the New Zealand Associated Churches of Christ, is spending this month in Masterton to inaugurate work in connection with the local Baptist Church and Church of Christ.

Official advice has been received by Air Headquarters, Wellington, that the Distinguished Fiying Cross has been awarded to Pilot Officer Jack Buckley, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. His father is Mr H. L. Buckley, Market Road, Auckland. News has been received from Egypt that Major J. Ferris Fuller, of the New Zealand Dental Corps, and Assistant Director of Dental Services, had been promoted to lieutenant-colonel. Prior to the outbreak of war, Lt.-Col. Fuller was in private practice in Masterton with Captain C. C. Cook. Among the appointments of officers to the Home Guard announced in the Gazette last night were the following:— Major-General R. Young, C. 8.. C.M.G.. D. 5.0., from the Retired List,. to be Brigadier, and is appointed DirectorGeneral of the Home Guard at Army Headquarters; Colonel R. St. J. Beere, D. 5.0., V.D.. Retired List, to be Colonel, and is appointed District Director, Wellington district.

Squadron Leader A. A. N. Breckon, D.F.C., who arrived fom England two months ago to take up duties with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has now been posted to Wigram. He was the first New Zealand winner of the Distinguished Flying Cross to return to the Dominion after seeing action in the war, and made 32 raids over enemy territory as an officer of No. 75 (New Zealand) Bomber Squadron, R.A.F.

The death has occurred of Mr Alexander Matthews, Gordon Road, Hastings. Mr Matthews, who had been ailing for some time, was born in Auckland 57 years ago and went to Hastings in 1915, taking up an appointment as manager of Wilson's shoe shop which he held till his death. He was a prominent member of the choir of St. Matthew’s Church and also a leading member of the Buffalo Lodge.
