“The Grafter.")
Gladynev's Splendid Win. The topweight and favourite, Gladynev, was responsible for a solid winning effort in the principal handicap at ■ the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting at Awapuni yesterday. He was with the leaders early but half way through the running he had drifted and at the five he was back last with Colonel Bogey and Meamea. The pace was made by Pekoe and Proclamation, with Du Maurier and Lambourn very handy, but by the time they reached the home turn all the horses in behind had improved their positions except Gladynev, whose rider chose to stick to the fence. From the three onward he got a great go and just as Pekoe was holding off Proclamation and Du Maurier, Gladynev appeared on the scene just in behind the leaders and, going up between Pekoe and Proclamation, he gradually wore dowii Pekce to win narrowly but very decisively. Gladynev is among the entries at the farterton meeting.
Outstays Opponents. The Masterton'horse, Moderate, outstayed his opponents at the finish of the Putiki Handicap at the Wanganui •lackey Club’s meeting yesterday. He was back in the rear of the field in most of the running but, by sticking to the fence, he got through without covering any extra ground. Gothic had made the running with the favourite Kanui Te Pai, well placed in behind, others handy being Te Oriko, Magnifier and Arabic. Kanui Te Pai challenged Gothic in the straight and only just managed to snatch a second from him on the post, but neither was able to withstand the run of Moderate once ho got through. Moderate is a black gelding by Ollatrim —Glow, and won the Sumner Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting last month in a determined manner. On
the first day of the meeting he was slow off the mark in the Avonhead Handicap (7 furlongs) and never had a chahce. He is owned and trained by B. Burgess, of Opaki.
Sandy Say Again. The Eketahuna-owned horse Sandy Bay made it three wins on end when he took the hack sprint in a close fin- ) ish at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting at Awapuni yesterday. Elusory endeavoured ah all the way win and still led at the last furlong from the second favourite, Vin d’Honneur, who had attended him throughout, but then Sandy Bay, taking a risk by coming up in between the leading pair, got the “go" and went through to win narrowly. Vin d’Honneur hung on tenaciously to make a dead-heat for second place and she looked as if she would be the most improved by the race. Grand Chase was fourth, then > Erinsccurt, Master Solway and ExPupil, but nothing ever seriously threatened the first three horses. The favourite, Silver Ball, was handy to the turn and then got a bad check. Sandy Bay has been nominated for the Carterton meeting on Saturday. September 13.
