MOLE DRAINAGE

DEMONSTRATION ON TUESDAY.

A field demonstration on the "McLeod” system of mole drainage is to be held on Mr G. Thomson’s Westmere property at 2 p.m. on Tuesday next. This system, which was evolved by Mr B. McLeod, a well known Manawatu farmer, is considered by the Department of Agriculture to be the most efficient, as well as one of the cheapest, of mole drainage systems under conditions suited to its application. This demonstration should, therefore, be of great interest to all farmers interested in the subject, particularly at the present time when fertiliser shortage is causing more attention to be devoted to alternative pasture and soil improvement practices. At this field day also, Mr 0. L. Sykes, of Westmere, will be demonstrating his automatic release pipe puller. This attachment, invented by Mr Sykes, with the assistance of Mr H. A. Harcombe, of Masterton, is a most ingenious and useful device whereby an ordinary field tile may be drawn into a mole drain outlet. When pulled to its full depth the tile is automatically detached from the mole plug and remains solidly fixed in the outlet while the mole plough continues its normal course. All interested are cordially invited to be present.
