BACONER PIGS

AN UNEXPECTED REQUEST ORDER PLACED IN DOMINION. EY BRITISH MINISTRY OF FOOD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The announcement that the British Ministry of Food has placed an order in the Dominion for up to 5000 tons of baconer meat was made last night by the Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay. The Minister, who said that the Government would purchase baconer pigs for export from, now till November 30, warned farmers that as no indication had been given of anj’ purchase in excess of the present order they would not be advised to plan baconer production beyond local market requirements after the end of November. The Minister, who recalled that in February the Government had been ordered to cease exporting baconer' pigs to Britain, said that since May 1/ no baconers had been accepted for export by freezing companies. The British Ministry of Food's unexpected order, therefore, would be welcomed by the farmers. “The maximum carcase weight will be 1501 b.,” Mr Barclay said, “and freezing works are being instructed to accept baconer pigs for freezing for export till November 30. Farmers should arrange for the disposal of their stock through the usual trade channels. “As the Ministry of Food has given no indication that any future purchases will be made in excess of the present order of 5000 tons, I must sound a note of warning to the farmers,” the Minister added. “They will be well advised not to plan their baconer production beyond the local market requirements after November 30. At the same time, I am of the opinion that the ability to export during the coming year this present order of 5000 tons, together with a reasonable tonnage of porkers, and the usual requirements of the local market, will enable the pig-producing industry to continue functioning without any dislocation.”
