DRASTIC RETRENCHMENT IN AMERICA MANY INDUSTRIES AFFECTED. HEAVY DEMAND ON WORKING POPULATION. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, September 2. Mr Leo Cherne, well-known business research expert, stated that the Office of Production Management is “reliably understood” to have prepared secretly a list of more than 40 industries embracing thousands of business concerns that face drastic retrenchment or a complete shut-down as a result of raw material starvation under the national defence programme. He added that the programme would eventually require one-quarter of the working time of the entire employed population and an equal fraction of the national income.
