ACTIVE IN BLACK SEA AREA ENEMY WARSHIP & TANKS DESTROYED. HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES ON EASTERN FRONT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) RUGBY, September 2. A supplementary Russian communique states: “During the last three days, aeroplanes of the Black Sea Fleet have been very successful in attacking the enemy. They destroyed an enemy warship, 83 tanks, 50 armoured cars and many oil supplies. “In the Smolensk district the 161st German Regiment has been annihilated. Only ten, men survived. The German commandant, Ludwig Robert, who has been taken prisoner, stated that the regiment came from France ten days ago. In connection with the heavy German losses on the Eastern front, the Germans have brought from France, Belgium and Holland regular troops and replaced the occupation army with reservists, but now the reservists have been brought to the Eastern front as well and they have been replaced ..by wounded German soldiers who have not yet recovered.”
