SIGNS OF INTENSIFIED ENEMY EFFORTS
Some Unconfirmed German Claims RUSSIAN COUNTER-ATTACKS CONTINUE IN UKRAINE BERLIN REPORTS CAPTURE OF ODESSA WATERWORKS LONDON, September 2. The latest reports of the fighting in Russia indicate the launching of a fresh German onslaught near Leningrad, but these reports are not confirmed. Leningrad, it is stated, has become a front line zone and the streets are filled with troops and munition lorries. The German High Command states that operations ai e proceeding according to plan. After a lull of two weeks, the battle for Leningrad appears to be reaching its climax. The nearest point which the Germans are definitely known to have reached is Luga, 85 miles south of Leningrad. x , , There has been no official news for the past three days in respect to the fighting north of Leningrad. Thei Finns claim to have occupied a village 50 miles south-east of Viborg. The Russians are said to be now back on the Stalin Line in the Karelian Isthmus. ' A Berlin message states that German naval forces are being used to cover the northern flank of the army advancing towards Leningrad. x , _ In the Ukraine, according to Berlin reports, the Russians are making strong attempts to establish bridgeheads on the western bank of the Dnieper. Berlin claims that Rumanian troops, continuing their assault on Odessa, have captuied the waterworks. During the past three days bombers of the Soviet Fleet Air Arm have attacked the enemy unceasingly.
