AXIS THREAT

TROOPS ON THE TURKISH FRONTIER STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT INONU. RELIANCE ON ARMY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 31. Newspapers in Moscow feature a Geneva report that Italian troops are massing on the Turkish frontiers with Greece and Bulgaria. Well-informed circles in Istanbul affirm that Germany intends to bring the total troops on the Turkish frontier up to 300,000. They state that German officers are studying the terrain of Chanak and that the Turkish armies are equipped with the most modern armaments, are thoroughly trained and are ready to fulfil to the last drop of blood any order from the Government for peace and security. President Inonu, in a message to the army, declared: “Our army is still our nation’s greatest guarantee.”
