TORPEDOES GET HOME
ACHIEVEMENTS OF BRITISH SUBMARINES AGAINST ENEMY SHIPS ' IN MEDITERRANEAN. ADMIRALTY GIVES DETAILS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.42 a.m.) RUGBY, August 31. Submarines of the British Mediterranean Fleet continue successfully to harass the enemy. The following Admiralty communique gives some of ther most recent successes: “On the afternoon of August 24 .a squadron of three Italian six-inch gun cruisers was sighted at sea, escorted by six destroyers and flying-boats and an attack was made on the six-inch gun cruisers. The severe counterattack which followed prevented the commanding officer of his Majesty's submarine from observing the result of an explosion which followed the firing of his torpedoes. “A large schooner, with a cargo of oil, had been sunk by gunfire. Another submarine found and sank a 4.000-ton supply ship. A heavily laden vessel of 2,000 tons, escorted by trawlers, has been sunk and one hit was made on a liner in a convoy which was proceeding at high speed, under escort. The result of this attack is not certain. A large schooner, fully laden with stores, has been sunk by gunfire. “An Italian tanker of 4,000 tons, in a convoy escorted by destroyers and flying-boats, has been attacked and although the tanker was not seen to sink, two hits were scored on her with torpedoes.”
