Carterton and Old Boys met at Lansdowne on- Saturday in the Bannin Shield knock-out competition, and a good, keen game was witnessed. Carterton was the better team but Old Boys, for a young team, put up a splendid showing. For the first ten minutes Carterton did most of the attacking. From a centre by Sewell, Jackson opened the score with a shot which gave Parsons no chance. From the bully Carterton went through and Sewell goalee! from a good angle shot. A spell of even play, with Old Boys livening up a little, followed, until Carterton broke through the defence and A. Fisher added to the score. From the bully J. Harrington made a good solo run, beating the defence, but his shot missed. Carterton again attacked and Jackson scored. Old Boys attacked and Faulknor opened their score. From the bully, Carterton soon had Old Boys in trouble and a scramble in front of the net was cleared, but Carterton was quickly back on the attack from which Hooper scored with a high shot. During the last five minutes of the spell Old Boys put more dash into their play and from a fast follow in E. Jaspers scored. Old Boys again attacked' and Carterton conceded a penalty corner from which Faulknor scored with half-time being called soon after.
On resuming Carterton attacked and Jackson goaled with a good shot. From the bully Fisher went through on his own but his shot was well saved by Parsons. Old Boys then attacked, Ward saving the shot at . goal, but Faulknor following in, scored. Carterton attacked and Qld Boys conceded a penalty corner, but off-side play gave Old Boys relief. McHattie made a run down the line but missed an easy chance at goal. Carterton attacking again forced Old Boys to a penalty corner from which Hooper scored. The closing stages were in Carterton's favour, and ” just before time Sewell scored with an angle shot, the game ending in a win for Carterton by 8 goals to 4. Messrs Hayne and Moor were the umpires. WESLEY v. GREYTOWN. Wesley and Greytown met at Greytown and a very evenly contested game resulted. Greytown was one goal up at the interval. Wesley made the scores even in the second.spell, and when time was called the teams had registered one goal each, which necessitated extra time beingplayed, Wesley then gaining the necessary goal required to win. Wesley and Carterton will now meet in the Bannin .Shield final next Saturday. MEN’S MATCH CANTERBURY BEAT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Chiefly because of their superiority in the forwards, the Canterbury hockey representatives beat Wellington by three goals to two on Saturday afternoon. The match was not up to the highest interprovincial form, but after a somewhat dull first spell there was an exhibition of much better hockey m the second. The ground was very heavy after overnight rain. LADIES AT PLAY , REPRESENTATIVE GAMES. WAIRARAPA TEAMS IN WELLINGTON. ißy Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Ths Day. Heavy grounds at Newtown Park materially affected the standard of play in the women’s hockey representative matches between Wellington and Wairarapa in senior A, senior B and junior grades on Saturday. Wellington won both senior games and Wairarapa succeeded in the junior match. The senior A match did not produce hockey of reasonably high standard. Though Wellifngton won by 4 goals to I, Wairarapa might have made a much better effort had the right wing, Miss Jean Harding, been given more op-' portunities. When the ball did go the way of this speedy winger, wnich I was not often, the Wellington defence had to work very hard. Wairarapa s failure rested in too much concentration on the attacks to the left which, incidentally, suited the Wellington defence. On the run of play the city team deserved its success. Playing conditions appeared to suit Wellingto more so than the visitors, but, nevertheless, Mrs V. Keillor, Wellington goal-keeper, would have had much more to do had the Wairarapa forwards been able to get under the ball in the heavy mud surrounding the circle . Wellington opened their scoring account early in the first half, Miss J. Mack, inside left, topping off a nice movement from the left wing, Miss J. Riley, to run in and beat the visitinggoalie. Before half time the same player, as an outcome of a melee in front of goal, lifted the ball nicely into the net. Before the spell Miss Jean Harding made a pretty . breakaway on the right wing to place Wairarapa ort the attack. Her centre was a perfect effort, enabling Miss E. Madsen, inside right, to net. ' The second half was fairly interesting, but Wairarapa’s changed methods of attack
