CANADIAN TROOPS
MR MACKENZIE KING BOOED IRRITATION OVER INACTION IN BRITAIN. PLACE WANTED IN EASTERN CAMPAIGN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) OTTAWA, August 26. The Associated Press says that news that Canadian troops in England booed their visiting Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, has shocked Canadians at home, though they knew from letters that the troops were irritated by their long inaction and discontented at Canada's failure to introduce conscription. Days before Mr Mackenzie King’s arrival theats were heard that he would be given a warm reception, the agency says. The men hold him personally responsible for the failure of the Canadian Army to be given a place alongside the Australians in the Eastern campaign. “Mr Churchill understands that the Canadian Government places no restrictions whatever upon any decision regarding the dispositions of the Canadian troops, except that the Government is given the opportunity of knowing what is contemplated and of expressing its view on the subject,” said Mr Mackenzie King, addressing Canadian troops. “Mr Churchill told me that he hoped I realise the Canadian forces are retained in Britain because Britain is the most important part of the Empire, the defence of which is the most significant of all factors which will ultimately determine the outcome of the war.”
