Card Evening. The usual fortnightly five hundred card party conducted by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. will be held this evening commencing at 7.45 o’clock in the Association’s lounge. An open -.invitation is extended to patrons and a happy evening is assured. Good prizes are offered with supper provided.
Home Nursing Classes. The St. John Ambulance Nursing Division, will hold an afternoon cltiss in Home Nursing commencing on Thursday, September 4. The class will be held in the Lecture Room, Municipal Building. The course will include bed-making and everything connected with Home Nursing. Anyone wishing to enrol may do so by ringing Mrs H. E. Pither, phone 2001. Amateur Billiards.
The semifinals of the New Zealand amateur billiards championship were played in Wellington yesterday. In the afternoon session S. Moses, New Zealand champion in 1940, struck his top form against A. Armstrong, and won 666-329. R. Carrick, Auckland, met V. Cheat, Canterbury, in the second semifinal, winning 666-227. The final will begin tonight, when Carrick will meet Moses in the first half of 1500 up. The concluding half will be played tomorrow night, and will be refereed by Ser-geant-Major J. Meldrum, N.Z.T.S.
Theft of Oranges.
A fine of £lO was imposed on a waterside worker, James Bernard Jones, in the Lyttelton Magistrates’ Court for the theft of eight oranges, valued at 2s. In addition Jones will be debarred from working on the waterfront in future. Jones pleaded guilty. Mr T. White, secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union said in evidence that Jones had been a member of the union for many years and was transferred from Auckland about three months ago. He was married with two small children. Waterside workers who were convicted of pillaging were now denied further work on the waterfront.
Probation for Theft. Two years’ probation was the penalty imposed on Leonard Arthur Charman, lorry driver, Utiku, aged 27, who pleaded guilty in the Taihape Magistrates’ Court to the theft of £6 15s, the property of Frederick Hadlow Barton. The theft was committed at Barton’s garage on August 18, the money being taken from a drawer in the office. The cash was contained in five separate canvas bags, each inside the other. Messrs H. Johnston and E. Loader occupied the Bench. Sergeant W. Brown conducted the prosecution for the police. Accused was arrested by Constable G. Phillips. The Bench congratulated the police on their smart work in bringing the culprit to justice. CharI man was ordered to refund the.stolen 'money.
