MADE BY THE GERMANS

Russian Counter-Offensive on Central Front SOVIET REPORTS SINKING OF FOUR TRANSPORTS COUNTER-CLAIMS BY THE ENEMY LON DOX, August 25. The Germans have at last admitted the week-old counteroffensive by the Russians in the central sector of the front. The official Berlin News Agency states that the Russians, in order to check the German advance, have carried out a heavy attack during the last few days in the central sector. They throw in strong tank forces, supported by artillery, against a German infantry division. The Germans claim that eight Russian attacks were repulsed with the loss of over 120 tanks. Otherwise there is very little news from any part of the Russian front. A German communique claims progress everywhere but gives no details. A Russian communique states that warships in the Baltic sank four German transports carrying troops and munitions. Six hours later the Germans replied with the claim that they had sunk six Russian ships, three merchant vessels, two minesweepers, and a destroyer.
