STRENGTH AT SEA

OF COUNTRIES ALLIED WITH BRITAIN NAVAL AND MERCHANT FLEETS. USEFUL AID IN CONVOY WORK. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. August 22. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr A. V. Alexander, has indicated the part that Allied countries are playing in maintaining sea communications. Between them the Allied countries (other than Britain) have 190 fighting ships, manned by 14,600 men. These forces are taking their full share in convoy and escort work, mine-sweeping and in anti-submarine patrols.

Most of the Allied warships are destroyers. submarines and small ships. Mr Alexander gave details of the strength of the merchant fleets of the Allied countries assisting Britain. The biggest was the Norwegian, with 720 ships of 3,250,000 tons. The Netherlands merchant fleet totalled 480 ships of 2.250.000 tons; the Greek 240 ships of 1.000.000 tons, and Free French, Belgian and Polish ships totalled 750.000 tons.
