SALUTING THE FLAG
MR C. CARR’S REMARKS. FURTHER CRITICISM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, August 21. At a public gathering this evening to honour Timaru soldiers the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, referred to remarks made in Parliament on August 8 by Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., regarding saluting the flag. Mr Tweedy said he felt the remarks were exceedingly unfortunate and were contrary to the spirit prevailing in the Dominion and Empire. He hoped they did not represent the feelings of the constituents whom Mr Carr represented.
“We have to encourage children to respect the flag, which is the symbol of all we hold dear. We should encourage children to pay tribute to the flag for on them depends the future of the Empire. I dissociate myself from the sentiments expressed by the member for Timaru.”
