ARBOR DAY

TREE PLANTING AT HADLOW SCHOOL.

NATIVE PLANTATION MADE BY BOYS.

The celebration of Arbor Day at Hadlow Preparatory School, Masterton, took place this week when, in a section of the grounds on the southern boundary, a native plantation was made by the boys. They first erected a brushwork shelter and small shelters for the loss hardy trees. Inside the grounds a neat wire fence was added to prevent any further damage. Great care was taken in the planting so as to give the little trees a good start in their life and the box's will later take special care of them. The trees were planted by members of the staff.

An interested visitor on Wednesday was Dr. Archer Hosking, president of the Masterton Beautifying Society, who expressed keen approval of the work done.

In all, twenty-eight native trees were planted —rimu, totara, golden akeake, hinau, kahikatea, manuka, veronica, senecio, drimys, hulkiana (lilac), ngaio, kowhai, rangiora, cabbage palm, ornamental and ordinary flax. The trees were all presented by parents and friends of the boys and by Messrs Duncan and Davies (New Plymouth) and Robinson and Sons (Masterton).

From time to time it is intended to add to the collection but it will be restricted to native trees.

Six flowering apples, donated by the Masterton Beautifying Society, were planted in various corners of the school grounds.
