MOVE ON LENINGRAD

barely twelve miles south of Leningrad. The Berlin Radio has threatened that the Luftwaffe will grind Leningrad to rubble, like that of
Warsaw, if the city is defended
Meanwhile, the Soviet Central Army is counter-attacking strongly in the Smolensk area. The “Red Star” states that troops under General Koniev are increasing the weight of their attacks and have captured more local centres.
Moscow states that Marshal Budenny has routed the 94th German Infantry Division, under General Feiffer. Three-quarters of the division were killed or wounded, and many taken prisoner, in a ten-day battle. The Berlin News Agency claims the capture of high Russian officers in the Dnieper Bend, including Lieu-tenant-General Sokolov, described as commander of the Soviet Sixteenth Tank Corps, who is seriously wounded.
