ORATORY CONTESTS.
RESULTS MOST SATISFACTORY
The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held in Masterton last night. The chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, presided. There were also present: Mrs J. L. Hair, Messrs A. Owen Jones, L. l.i Daniell, F. C. Daniell, F. M. Whyte, G. Dickel, T. Hanley, and the secretary. Mr H. M. Boddington. An apology for absence was received from Mr J. D. O'Connor. -The heating of the main brick building is generally unsatisfactory, the worst portion being the west wing, including the science room,” said the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox. It was decided to make representations to the Education Department in the matter. Mr Hancox reported on the results of the recent oratory contests. Members considered the results extremely satisfactory and the Principal was asked to convey the board's congratulations to all who had participated. Mr Hancox said that the St. Andrew Society, through the generosity of the late Mr Robert Miller, had donated a cup to be presented annually to the winner of the boys’ contest. It was decided to write a letter of appreciation to Mrs Miller. The Railways Department advised that it was investigating the possibility of improving the service for children attending the college.
“The northern train service is inconvenient both to pupils and the public,”- commented Mr Nicol. Mr Nicol said that representatives of the 'board visited the Penrose Training Farm on July 26 to discuss agricultural training. The trustees of the farm were similarly entertained by the board at the College on July 30. He said that he was satisfied that the discussions would be of great benefit to all concerned. Principal’s Report. The Principal, in his report, stated that he and the chairman visited Gladstone on August 12 to investigate the possibility of resuming classes in woodwork and dressmaking there. Enquiries were still proceeding. A social gathering held at the end of the term in the College Assembly Hall on August 19 proved successful. Mr M. Dixon, an ox-pupil had donated £2 to the Assembly Hall cloak room fund. Miss V. Price and an anonymous donor had each presented a book to the library. The first Rugby fifteen would take part in the quadrangular tournament at Hutt Valley High School on August 23 and 25. The boys’ hockey team would play in the secondary schools' tournament in Wellington from August 25 to August 30.
