STIRRING APPEAL
MADE BY VOROSHILOV DEFENCE OF LENINGRAD TO THE LAST. FORMATION OF MILITIA DETACHMENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) MOSCOW, August 21. , Marshal Voroshilov, commander on the northern front, issued an appeal to all the inhabitants cf Leningrad to defend the city to the last. The appeal was also signed by the Leningrad provincial and city chiefs. It states: — “The enemy is attempting to penetrate into Leningrad. He wants to destroy our houses, factories and workshops, rob the people, and shed the blood of innocent victims, and he also wants to kill the peaceful population and wreck our country’s freedom. “This will not be. The enemy will never set foot in our beautiful city. “The Red Army is gallantly defending the city’s approaches. The fleet and. air force machines are inflicting blows on the enemy. But the enemy is not yet broken.
“Many people in Leningrad have comrades fighting at the front, and we are addressing them. You must follow the example of your comrades at the front. You must inspire them with a spirit of fearlessness, of loyalty to the nation and of courage. “We will form new detachments of the National Militia to help the Red Army, and they will prepare for the defence of Leningrad. These detachments must immediately start learning their new duties. All workers of Leningrad must fully support the new detachments. Women! Inspire your husbands, your sons and brothers. Workers of Leningrad! Produce more and more ammunition and arms, and thereby assist in forging our victory. Let nothing stop you, neither bombing nor other difficulties.
“Prepare for yet more abominable measures by the Hitlerite bandits. We can and will stop the bloody horde which is threatening the Soviet people. Let us all rise up in defence of our city, our children, our freedom and our honour. It is a sacred duty, and we shall fulfil it. With oui’ Bolshevik organisation, discipline and courage we will crush the detested enemy. “Stand firm to the end. At the risk of cur lives we shall fight and destroy the enemy. Death to the bloody Fascist German robbers! Victory will be ours,”
