CRAFT OF WEAVING
ADDRESS & DEMONSTRATION. MEETING OF ART CLUB. Proving that interest in useful crafts is strong, both among members and outside the club, there was an excellent attendance at the Masterton Art Club’s meeting last night, to hear a talk on spinning by Mrs F. C. Brockett. Coming in war time, the talk was doubly valuable for it explained to the audience, concisely and clearly, a craft which becomes increasingly useful as the war goes on and more and more factories are diverted to vital work. After giving a sketch of the primitive beginnings of the craft, arising out of man’s instinct to clothe himself. Mrs Brockett traced its development, explained the working of the spinning wheel and then demonstrated each step in spinning, from fleece to finished wool.
Mrs Brockett answered many questions about the craft and in conclusion generously offered to teach anyone of the many in her audience whom she hoped, would like to learn. Mr S. B. Maclennan proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Brockett for an address which he referred to as one of the most interesting and profitable talks Art Club members had yet had.
